The celebration of the 128th World Radiography Day in Ghana, took place at the Conference and Training Hall of the LEKMA Hospital in Accra. November 8 of every year is globally marked as World Radiography Day. It commemorates the day in 1895 when Roentgen discovered x-ray, laying the foundation of the Radiography Profession. This year’s celebration, themed ‘Celebrating Patient Safety,’ was highly successful, with the venue filled to capacity, and some attendees viewing from the Hall corridors. As has become the tradition in Ghana’s celebration of the discovery of X-ray, the event was divided into two parts.

The first part, referred to as the conference, featured speeches and messages from the leadership of the Ghana Society of Radiographers (GSR) and other Senior Radiographers. Chaired by the President of the Society, Mr. Dennis Amartey Ahia, the conference included Mr. Ahia’s congratulatory message to all radiographers. He thanked them for their professional radiography services over the years and wished them success as they strive to serve their clients better and safer. Emphasizing the celebration’s theme, Mr. Ahia underscored the crucial importance of protecting patients from adverse effects of radiation while providing accurate diagnostic images and treatments. The President of GSR asserted, “‘Radiation protection is a key aspect of maintaining the safety of patients in radiography and must be guided by the three fundamental principles: justification, optimization, and the application of ALARA”. The Head of Radiographers in Ghana also reminded all radiographers of their responsibility to protect children by reporting suspected physical abuse or non-accidental injury of children to the appropriate authorities within their workplaces. Find the full speech of the President of GSR at the end of this report.

In the Guest of Honour’s speech, Mr. Prince Rockson admonished radiographers to follow standard protocols in their daily activities, as this will, among other benefits, serve as evidence should any legal matter arise from their practice. Mr. Rockson is a member of the Board of the Allied Health Professions Council. He also extended warm felicitations from the ISRRT to radiographers in Ghana. He specifically mentioned that the ISRRT regional representative for Africa, Ms. Elizabeth Balogun, ‘happily extends her greetings and well wishes to Ghanaian radiographers and look forward to working together to strengthen the ISRRT’.

The occasion also saw the swearing in of the new executives of the Federation of Medical Imaging Students Associations. They were charged by the Special Guest of Honour to keep the federation united and work to promote radiography education wherever they may find themselves.

The new executives are:

  1. Mr. Jeffery Darko Boateng – President
  2. Mr. Alex Aduamah Essah – Vice President
  3. Mr. El-Shaddai Gyetuah – General Secretary
  4. Mr. Maxwell Adu – Financial Secretary
  5. Mr. Ahmed Hussain Sambo – Organising Secretary
  6. Mr. Raphael Kofi Ganyo – Public Relations Officer
